Lucknow: Heavy rain triggered floods, landslides and other rain-related incidents across Uttar Pradesh, killing at least 56 people and injuring 46 others over a 48-hour period, according to the state Relief Commissioner’s office. The downpour also left 107 animals dead and damaged 1,021 houses.

The heavy rain battered large parts of the state on September 25 and 26, causing widespread disruption and damage. Rescue, relief and damage-assessment operations were underway in affected districts, while crop losses were still being assessed.

Sitapur among worst-hit districts

Sitapur recorded the highest number of deaths at seven. Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich and Balrampur reported five fatalities each, while Ayodhya and Gorakhpur recorded four deaths each.

Hardoi reported the highest number of injuries at seven, followed by Mainpuri and Shravasti with five each. Barabanki recorded four injuries, while Sitapur and Lakhimpur Kheri reported three each.

775% excess rainfall

Uttar Pradesh received an average of 66.5 mm of rain during the 48-hour period, compared with the normal 7.6 mm- an excess of about 775%, according to the situation report.

As many as 56 of the state’s 75 districts recorded “large excess” rainfall. Farrukhabad registered the highest departure from normal at 7,385%, followed by Kannauj at 5,664%, Shahjahanpur at 4,408%, Hamirpur at 4,240% and Mahoba at 4,100%.

More than 1,000 houses damaged

A total of 1,021 houses were reported damaged across the state. Hardoi accounted for the highest number at 272, followed by Sitapur with 108.

Several other districts, including Chandauli, Auraiya, Gonda, Hamirpur, Shahjahanpur and Bahraich, also reported damage to residential structures.

The rainfall and related incidents also caused significant livestock losses, with 107 animal deaths reported across the state.

Hardoi recorded the highest number at 28, followed by Sitapur with 16 and Kannauj with 14. Bahraich and Kanpur Dehat recorded seven deaths each, while Unnao reported six.

Relief and crop-loss assessment underway

State authorities have continued rescue, relief and damage-assessment operations in affected areas. Relief Commissioner Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod said assessment of crop losses was still in progress as district administrations dealt with the aftermath of the heavy rain.

The latest spell came as monsoon activity intensified across the state, with heavy to very heavy rain forecast in parts of Uttar Pradesh.
