2018-ന് മുമ്പുള്ള ഉരുള്‍പൊട്ടലുകള്‍ കുറച്ചുദൂരമേ പോയിട്ടുള്ളൂ. അതിനു ശേഷമാണ് ഡാമിങ്ങ് ഇഫക്ട് ഉള്‍പ്പടെയുണ്ടായ ദുരന്തങ്ങളുണ്ടാകുന്നത്. പുത്തുമലയിലും സമാനസാഹചര്യമാണുണ്ടായത്. നിര്‍മാണ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ക്കുള്‍പ്പടെ തോടുകളും മറ്റും ചെറുതാക്കുന്നത് കാരണം ഇത് സംഭവിക്കാം, ജോണ്‍ മത്തായി വ്യക്തമാക്കി.

Unlike earlier minor incidents, newer landslides are intensified by narrowed streams and rampant construction. He cited Puthumala as a similar case of climate and development-induced disaster.
