'Mother to Son'
The poem 'Mother to Son' penned by Langston Hughes is tsructured in the form of a conversation between a mother and her son. Throughout this poem, the mother is േൃ്യing to convey the meaning of perseverance to her son. She advises her son that he will face many adversities in life, all of which he must overcome and keep going.
The mother reminds her son that life was not a crystal stair for her. It was quite tough with 'tacks and splinters' in it. The boards were torn up. In some places there was no carpet. She says, 'I'se been aclimbin' on'. She admits that there were 'landin's, and turnin' corners' and sometimes not even a single gleam of light. She advises her son not to turn back or set down on the steps even if it's hard to move on. She encourages her son by giving examples of her own perseverance. One has to display steady persistence to go up the stairway of life amidst obstacles which may be harsh.
The cetnral image of the poem is the 'crystal stair'. The stairway could be seen as a path to liberation to the African Americans. The use of expressions like 'tacks, splinters, torn boards, bare floor' etc. helps the reader to visualize what she would have endured in her lifetime. The poem is written in free verse and has a lyrical qualtiy. It consists of many AfroAmerican dialects. Hughes conveys the idea of hope through the poem.
