കാലാവസ്ഥാവ്യതിയാനം കേരളം നേരിടുന്ന പ്രധാന പ്രശ്‌നമാണെന്നും 2018-ന് ശേഷമുണ്ടായ ഉരുള്‍പൊട്ടലുകള്‍ ഗുരുതര പ്രത്യാഘാതമുണ്ടാക്കിയവയാണെന്നും മുണ്ടക്കൈ-ചൂരല്‍മല ഉരുള്‍പൊട്ടലുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട പഠനകമ്മിറ്റിയ്ക്ക് നേതൃത്വം നല്‍കിയ മുതിര്‍ന്ന ഭൗമശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്‍ ജോണ്‍ മത്തായി. 

2018-ന് മുമ്പുള്ള ഉരുള്‍പൊട്ടലുകള്‍ കുറച്ചുദൂരമേ പോയിട്ടുള്ളൂ. അതിനു ശേഷമാണ് ഡാമിങ്ങ് ഇഫക്ട് ഉള്‍പ്പടെയുണ്ടായ ദുരന്തങ്ങളുണ്ടാകുന്നത്. പുത്തുമലയിലും സമാനസാഹചര്യമാണുണ്ടായത്. നിര്‍മാണ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ക്കുള്‍പ്പടെ തോടുകളും മറ്റും ചെറുതാക്കുന്നത് കാരണം ഇത് സംഭവിക്കാം, ജോണ്‍ മത്തായി വ്യക്തമാക്കി.
