Udupi was earlier known as Roopya Peetha. In one version the place got its name from moon. Udu means stars and Pa means 'Lord of', ie lord of stars, Moon. The place where the moon performed penance and retained his grace is known as Udupi. It is the third city having the heighst per capita income in Karnataka after Bangalore and Mangalore. Syndicate Bank and Corporation Bank originated from this town. Tulu is the widely spoken language of the town, followed by Kannada and Konkani. Manipal, a town which boasts of its educational and medical credentials, is a twin city.
