പതിനെട്ടാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ അന്ത്യത്തോടു കൂടി ആംഗലേയ സാഹിത്യത്തിൽ ഭാവനാസമ്പന്നവും വൈകാരികോന്മുഖവുമായ ഒരു കാവ്യയുഗം പിറന്നു. പ്രകൃതിയെ ഗുരുവും ദൈവവും സർവസ്വവുമായി കരുതിപ്പോന്ന ആ കാല്പനികയുഗത്തിന്റെ (Romantic Age) മുഖ്യവക്താക്കൾ വേഡ്‌സ്‌വർത്തും കോൾറിഡ്ജും ആയിരുന്നു. ഇരുവരും ചേർന്ന് പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച, ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സാഹിത്യത്തിലെ കാല്പനിക യുഗത്തെ അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ കൃതിയാണ് ‘Lyrical Ballads.’ ആ കാവ്യസമാഹാരത്തിൽ സചേതനമായ പ്രകൃതിയുടെ വിശുദ്ധമായ മഹത്ത്വത്തെ വർണിക്കുന്ന ഒരു സുന്ദരകവിതയാണ് പത്താംതരത്തിലെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പാഠപുസ്തകത്തിൽ ആദ്യ യൂണിറ്റിൽ പഠനത്തിനായി നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്ന ‘Lines Written in Early Spring’.
ഫ്രഞ്ച് വിപ്ലവം സൃഷ്ടിച്ച സാമൂഹികവും സാംസ്കാരികവുമായ അലയൊലികൾ ആ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ സാഹിത്യരചന നിർവഹിച്ച ഏതാണ്ട് എല്ലാവരെയും സ്വാധീനിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. തന്റെ ഭാഗമായ മനുഷ്യനെ സംതൃപ്തനും സന്തുഷ്ടനുമാക്കി മാറ്റുന്നതിന് പ്രകൃതിക്ക് അതിന്റേതായ പദ്ധതികളുണ്ടെങ്കിലും മനുഷ്യന് അവയൊന്നും തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നതിനോ അനുഭവിക്കുന്നതിനോ സാധിക്കുന്നില്ല. കമനീയമായ പൂക്കളും പക്ഷികളും തുടങ്ങി പ്രകൃതിയിലെ സർവജീവജാലങ്ങളും പ്രകൃതിയുടെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്നുകൊണ്ട് ആനന്ദം കണ്ടെത്തുമ്പോൾ മനുഷ്യന് മാത്രം ആ ആനന്ദം അനുഭവിക്കാൻ കഴിയുന്നില്ല എന്ന നിരീക്ഷണം കവിയെ ചിന്താകുലനാക്കുന്നു.

Appreciation of the poem ‘Lines Written in Early Spring’
The poem “Lines Written in Early Spring” penned by William Wordsworth celebrates the relationship between man and nature. Also it praises the glory of the nature. As the poet sits and muses on nature, its beauty and its harmonious existence, his thoughts turn briefly to the misery of man. At the time of writing, the French Revolution was blazing in France which had a decisive impact on the Romantic poets including Wordsworth. The poet banquets his eyes with the yellowish primrose tufts and the blue periwinkle flowers. The poet trusts that every flower enjoys the air it breathes. He says that plants and flowers co-exist peacefully and seem to attain pleasure from their living. The birds around the poet hopped and played which is an expression of their thrill of pleasure. The poet can’t imagine how much their pleasure is. Tender twigs emerge out of their branches and tiny leaves appear on them. They also enjoy the breezy air. The poet feels that the divine plan or the Nature’s holy plan is pleasurable and peaceful co-existence. He wonders why man alone has moved away from this plan. The trees, birds, plants, animals are all happy in this world except human beings. Man is far away from nature and it makes the poet sad.
It is a typical romantic poem. It is beautified with figures of speech such as personification. ‘The periwinkle trailed its wreaths’ is an example for this. There are visual and auditory images in the poem which make it appealing to the readers. It is written in simple language with the rhyme scheme abab
