Sale of liquor is not a fundamental right: Govt

Kochi: Kerala Government submitted in a single bench of the high court a 9-page affidavit affirming its right to formulate a new liquor policy to implement prohibition in a phased manner. The government has right to revoke the liquor license issued to bar hotel owners in keeping with the new policy provided they were served the mandatory notice. The State also contended that bar owners have no right to question this policy since sale of liquor is not a fundamental right. It also averred that 5-star hotels were allowed to operate under tourist compulsions. Government also assured that all steps have taken to prevent the influx of spurious liquor once the decision is enforced.
