AIADMK’s Dr Thambidurai unanimously elected Dy speaker of LS

AIADMK leader Dr M Thambidurai was unanimously elected as the deputy speaker of the Lok Sabha. The motion moved by Home Minister Rajnath Singh was seconded by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. 11 parties including the Congress supported the MGR loyalist, who held the same post from 1985 to 1989, when Rajiv Gandhi was PM. A member of the 8th, 9th, 12th & 15th Lok Sabhas, the 67-year old was minister for Law & justice, Surface Transport and Company Affairs in the 1998-99 NDA government. He was minister for Higher Education in Jayalalithaa’s govt from 2001-06. The move ensured AIADMK’s support, with 37 MPs the 3rd largest party in LS, to NDA govt.
