Community Oppana & Kolkali exalt religious harmony

Kozhikode: In the last days to Eid al-Fitr {festival of breaking the fast} in the holy month of Ramadan, the students of Vattoli Sanskrit High School seized upon an idea to celebrate the spirit of communal tolerance by staging a show of religious harmony. Encouraged and with the participation of sympathetic elders, the young hearts and minds organised a mass ‘oppana’ {a muslim bridal song} with 300 girls. A group of boys performed ‘kolkali’ – common to traditional performing arts of Kerala, with dancers moving in a circle keeping step to the rhythmic beating of small sticks. “We see this as a symbol of love and kinship above all religious divide” says a young girl.
