Central Water Commission warns of drought in S India

Dilli: Central Water Commission, which examined water availability in 85 dams in India, has raised the spectre of an impending drought in S India. Of the 30 water reservoirs located here, water storage in 27 was less than 40% of their capacity. Storage in AP’s reservoirs was 67% below the level the CWC considers normal, TN had 64% below normal, Karnataka’s 59% less and Kerala’s 47% below normal. So far, the impact of reservoirs' receding water levels on power has been more pronounced in South India, as this region had received very little rainfall during the winters as well. Since Kerala depends on hydro-powered electricity, this is a doubly threatening scenario.
