Trawling ban comes into force

Thiruvananthapuram: A 47-day trawling ban by mechanised boats to 12 nautical miles will come into effect from midnight of June 15th as an annual monsoon season measure to conserve marine resources during the spawning season. Boats from outside the state have been directed to leave. Those in Neendakara will remain chained in the harbor, though traditional fisher folk can venture into the Arabian Sea in country craft. Including ancillary fishery industries, business worth re. 1,000 crore will take a hit. Scientific studies have revealed that monsoon-time ban on bottom-trawling, which has been in force for over two decades, has helped improve habitat of marine fish stock.
