Women employees agitate for right to ‘sit n work’

Kozhikode: Women employees of textile shops, including the historic Sweet Meat street, are condemned to a life of standing and working for a stretch of 12 hours, leading to a host of health issues. They have been forced to agitate by the inertia of the Labour Commission, which has refused to act on complaints against shop-owners. Alleging collusion between the two, activists attribute the apathy on the part of the labour department to rampant corruption. Come Labour Day, and they’ll exercise their right to sit, by staging a ‘sit-down’ protest. Agitating workers’ demands also include 8-hour work period, payment of minimum wages and curtailing the use of CCTv.
