Kochi: The shutters of Idamalayar dam was opened as the water level reached maximum storage capacity. Four shutters of the dam were opened at 5 am on Thursday. People dwelling in the area have been alerted and informed that the water level in Periyar river will increase by 1.5 metre. 164 cubic metre water will be released. Four shutters of the dam were opened by 80 cm. It is expected that water from the dam will reach Aluva within 4-5 hours. Before this, Idamalayar dam was opened in 2013. Earlier, it had been decided that the dam would be opened at 6 am. However, the heavy rain in the area caused the water level rise to 169.95 metre and the authorities decided to open the shutters at 5 am.
