Statue of Liberty climber pleads not guilty after protest

Therese Patricia Okoumou who scaled the stone pedestal of the Statue of Liberty to protest U.S. immigration policy pleaded not guilty to trespassing, disorderly conduct and interfering with governmental administration in her first court appearance. She was arrested after she climbed the statue’s pedestal and began a 3-hour standoff with police that led to the evacuation of the landmark on the 4th of July holiday, celebrating U.S. independence. Magistrate Judge Ona Wang ordered Okoumou to be released from federal custody. “In a democracy we do not put children in cages,” she told reporters. Her attorney, Rhidaya Shodhan Trivedi promised to keep on fighting family separation.
