Cops protect 200 journalists from Italian mafia

Paolo Borrometi, 35, editor website La Spia cannot move around anywhere in his native Sicily without police escort since he has been targetted by the mafia. Another 200 journalists too are under similar protection, making Italy unique among democracies. He says that none of them wants to become a hero but only want to honestly report facts. Before he was assaulted last year he received a note of solidarity from Daphne Caruana Galizia, the Maltese investigative journalist who was herself killed in a car-bomb attack last year, after exposing offshore tax havens. He started writing for local papers when 17, inspired by a Sicilian investigative reporter, Giovanni Spampinato, who was killed.
