CU mulls autonomy for teaching departments

Kozhikode: In a radical move, Calicut University mulls granting autonomous status to select varsity teaching departments to be chosen by expert committees to be appointed by the Syndicate. The potentially controversial proposal has been floated in a note set to come up for detailed discussion in the next syndicate meeting. If the consent is given and by state government as well, CU will become the first varsity in the state to have autonomous teaching departments. The move comes in the wake of the recent decision by the state to grant autonomy to select colleges. Some quarters have expressed reservations over the step alleging commodification of knowledge.
