A cyber attack cripples Atlanta as security experts shudder

Atlanta metropolitan area of about 60 lakh people has been crippled by a ransom-ware attack, which security experts have linked to a shadowy hacking crew, laying bare once again the vulnerabilities of governments as they rely on computer networks for routine operations. “We are dealing with a hostage situation,” Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said. After six days, residents still could not pay their traffic tickets or water bills online, or report potholes on a city website. Police are writing reports by hand. Travelers at the world’s busiest airport still could not use the free Wi-Fi. It is the most sustained cyber-attack ever mounted against a major American city. Last year in Dallas hackers set off tornado sirens at night.
