“Crazy dangerous” carfentanil seized

Police seized 53kg of a white and yellow powder from a house in Pickering, near Toronto. Lab tests revealed 42kg of it to be carfentanil – a drug described as “crazy dangerous” by the US Drug Enforcement Agency and which authorities consider as a potential chemical weapon. The seized drug could have yielded 420,000 doses with an estimated street value of re. 66.91 crore, an astronomical re. 15,930/gram. Developed in the 1970s as a tranquilizer for animals like elephants and bears, the synthetic opioid has also been studied as a potential chemical weapon by the US, China and Israel. It is said to have been deployed by Russian special forces while attempting rescue of hostages from a Moscow theatre in 2002.
