Hadiya case; An adult cannot be held hostage by father: SC

Kochi: In the Hadiya case, the Supreme Court on Tuesday made it clear that a 24-year- old girl, an adult, cannot be held hostage by her father against her wishes. The CJI-led bench stated that it it will examine if a High Court under Article 226 can quash a marriage. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also said it may appoint an alternate custodian for Hadiya in place of her father if needed. The bench fixed the matter for detailed hearing next Monday. Chief Justice of India Dipak Mishra asked while hearing the petition filed by a Shefin Jahan ,whose marriage to a Hindu girl Akhila after she converted to Islam and took the name Hadiya was annulled by the High Court.
