T'puram: Female Genital Mutilation has been reported from Kozhikode. According to UNICEF at least 20 crore girls and women alive today have undergone this so-called “cleansing the dirt” in 30 countries. Practiced by Muslims and Christians, although neither the Quran nor the Bible mentions it, more than half are from Egypt, Indonesia and Ethiopia. In the 1960s nearly every girl in predominantly Christian Ethiopia, underwent this tribal custom aimed at suppressing feminine sexuality. Dr. Bogaletch Gebre, who nearly bled to death as a 12-year old, has through her NGO, Kembatti Mentti-Gezzima-Tope, brought down the cutting from 74% in 2005 to 65%, according to a 2016 Ethiopian government report.
