People demand closure of Pepsico plant

Palakkad: Protesters, including women and children, laid siege to the bottling plant of Pepsico India at Wise Park in suburban Kanjikode demanding its express closure for compunding water distress in the area. The protesters, who chained the gates of the company in a symbolic gesture, accused the plant of extracting huge quantities of groundwater illegally. According to panchayat authorities Pepsico extracts 6.5 lakh litres per day, even as locals lack potable water. People say that though the panchayat had sought the cooperation of the Groundwater Department to conduct a joint inspection, the department was not very cooperative. The anti-water extraction committee will also seek legal aid.
