Puttingal due to excess fireworks storage: MBI exclusive

Kollam: Crime branch charge sheet reveals that one cause for the Puttingal tragedy was the temple storing 5,500 kgs of explosive material, far in excess of the stipulated quota of 15 kilos, which were kept in the nearby mansion. Moreover, the explosives were sub-standard and belonged to the banned category. Because of this, fireworks which should have exploded at a height of fifty feet, did so ten feet from the ground. The sparks ignited nearly 35,000 crackers and the resulting blast destroyed the entire building. Sample fireworks, which were prohibited, were conducted as part of the process of paying advance to the contractors in charge of the fireworks competition.
