Indian soap operas bewitch Ghanian evenings

The evenings in Accra, the capital of Ghana, have a North Indian hue now. For grabbing eyeballs are two Indian soap operas ‘Veera,’ and ‘Kumkum Bhagya.’ Viewers are held in thrall by the dramatic segues, cliffhangers, tension-heightening sound accompaniments and tight closeups capturing the shocked, ecstatic and exaggerated expressions of the actors in these serials. Bith imported soaps have been dubbed into Twi, a dialect of the local Akan language, by the television channel Adom TV. Families returning from work and school make a bee-line to the small screen, making it part of their regular television watching routine. Even local films come behind these two in terms of popular appeal.
