Populist announcements mark Isaac's budget

T'puram: Presenting the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government’s first budget, Finance Minister T M Thomas Isaac announced a slew of measures to ensure fiscal prudence as well as several populist measures. He said the government will not establish new institutions or create new official posts in the next two years in view of the acute financial crisis faced by the state. All pensions will be given through banks and one month’s pension will be given through banks and one month’s pension will be given as advance. Pension will be introduced for members of the Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme who are above 60 years of age. The budget propose to set aside Rs 1000 crore for a comprehensive Health Insurance scheme.
