Rajakooppu: orange country

Kollam: In the eastern part of the district in both Rajakooppu and Ambanadu the air is fragrant with the perfume of oranges, ripe for the picking. The bracing climate at an elevation of 2,800 feet and the wind too are conducive to orange cultivation. While Ambanadu oranges are slightly sour, the Rajakooppu ones are typically sweet. According to farmers even fertilisers are not used and the trees need no special care. Once they plant it, all they have to do is to prepare for the plucking! Flowering starts in March/April season and it takes six months to turn into tangy fruit. Though it commands a market price of sixty rupees, they get only half that from buyers who come from Tamil Nadu.
