Far from the madding crowd, a mangrove of solitude

Bengaluru: John Fennessy from New York first heard of perma-culture at Auroville in 2002. At Solitude Farm he met his architect wife Shweta. Five years later they shifted to her hometown, where her brother owned 5 acres, and began to cultivate it. It became Hamsah Farm, off Sarjapur Main Road, 30 kms from the city. It now boasts of 80 mango trees, 30 coconut palms, guavas, sapodilla, pappaya, plantains, pomegranates, peanuts, cow peas, spinach, ragi and maize. He relies on the outside world for very little. For the benefit of the huge cows, chicken and ducks between 30 and 50 per cent of the land is left for them to graze on. John has kept aside accommodation for visitors fleeing the city.
