Kozhikode: The cries and pangs of labour would see Makkamma rushing off irrespective of the time and the hour. Day in and day out she mid-wifed 3,000 births from the tender age of 14, starting out as a novice at ten to her mother, an adept in midwifery. For 70 long years she has eased the sweet pain of mothers listening to the rapture of the first cry of newborns at childbirth, without losing a life even once. Above all, to her caste was never a factor in a hide-bound society where people were treated as outcasts. To her a woman in labour belongs to the tribe of mothers. To a generation, which treats pregnancy as a disease costing thousands, she is still a solace. Her people honour her today.
