Forest department seeks sanction to shoot alleged Maoists

Thiruvananthapuram: The forest department has sought arms and commandos to fight alleged Maoists. They also demand permission to shoot Maoists as is perpetrated by our neighbouring states. There were unsubstantiated reports months back on Maoist sightings in Periya, Karikanni colony near Banasurasagar and Chembra in Wayanad district. The special police team called ‘Thunderbolt’ searched these areas, but in vain. The forest department warns that without regular searches, Maoists may hide in the inner forest. The department has made this request of the government based on the report of two DFOs, but the authorities are yet to act.
