Women's entry to Sabarimala: SC appoints amicus curiae

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday appointed senior lawyers Raju Ramachandran and K Ramamurthy as amicus curiae in connection with the plea to allow entry of women to the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple. Observing that Ayyappa has no gender bias, the court noted that the same has been mentioned in Bhagavad Gita too. The court further asked whether spirituality is exclusive privilege of men. A bench comprising Justice P C Ghose and Justice N.V. Ramana was hearing a petition filed by the Indian Young Lawyers Association and five women lawyers challenging the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple's custom of prohibiting the entry of women between the age of 10 and 50.
