In five years 200 deaths reported in jails, 23 unatural

Kochi: From the period of 2011 to 2015 December as many as 200 persons died in jails in the state. Of the total deaths reported in five years, 23 were unnatural deaths. The state government gave Rs 50,000 to Rs 4 lakhs to the relatives of the deceased as compensation. A total of Rs 30 lakh was spend in five years but no case was registered against any of the jail officials in these deaths. A total of 56 people during the remand period. The numbers are coming out at a time when there are reports that number of unnatural deaths in jails in state is rising.
