Dalit PhD student commits suicide; Students accuse VC, Govt

New Delhi: Rohith Vemula (26), a second year PhD student at University of Hyderabad, committed suicide on Sunday evening. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of various student groups said Rohith was highly depressed due to suspension and expulsion from the hostel. The five students, all belonging to Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) were on a sleep-in strike in the open on campus even since their expulsion.A case was registered by the police against Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya and University vice chancellor under SC/ST act. JNU students protested over this issue in front of HRD ministry. A strongly worded suicide note of Rohit went viral on the social media.
