International Theater Festival begins with ‘Sharira’

Thrissur: The 7-day long 8th International Theatre Festival of Kerala organised by Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi began at the Sahithya Akademi premises here. 20 plays from 10 countries will be staged at 5 different venues. It opened with ‘Sharira - Fire and Desire,’ the last work by legendary dancer-choreographer Chandralekha, performed by the Chennai-based Chandralekha Group, featuring writer-dancer Tishani Doshi and Kalari exponent Shaji John in a controlled unleashing of female and male energies, to Dhrupad accompaniment by the Gundecha Brothers, with a spell-binding rendition of ‘Janani Jagatjanani Jwalamuhki’. Art critic Sadanand Menon is the light designer.
