Stevia proves sweet to farmers

Bengaluru: Farmers are happy at the decision of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India allowing use of natural sweetener Stevia {steviol glycoside} in selected products, including soft drinks, dairy-based beverages and desserts. Since, the agriculture process is simple and returns are high as compared to traditional produce, farmers are doubly delighted. Moreover, it can be grown on small holdings, with 100% productivity and is climate-compatible in most states. Till now, many companies have been using aspartame, a high-intensity artificial sweetener. It could also open the floodgates for new products to enter the market as MNCs use it as an alternative to sugar and other sweeteners.
