Vaccine phobia: Diphtheria back in Malappuram

Malappuram : An outbreak of diphtheria has been reported in the district once again, as only 11 percent of the population took the preventive vaccine. Though 1,71,728 persons were supposed to undergo vaccination, only 20,000 people took it. In the district, the people are shying away from vaccines as propaganda by vested interests and certain groups on non-existent side effects are widespread. But, NGOs and organisations of doctors are conducting awareness classes and seminars to make people see the benefits of vaccination, said DMO Dr Ummer Farooq.
