Kozhikode: Two contract workers from Andhra who were cleaning an underground drain and an autorickshaw driver who tried to rescue them died after inhaling poisonous gases emanating from the drainage. The deceased have been identified as Meppakkudi Noushad of Karuvissery, Kozhikode, (auto driver), Bhaskar and Narasimham. The incident took place at Palayam, near Jaya auditorium. The Fire Force officials said that security guidelines were not followed while cleaning the drainage. Because of shortage of oxygen and the presence of poisonous gases, one should not enter the drainage as soon as it is opened.
