The benign face of Dharavi

Mumbai: Dharavi, a 535-acre sprawl in the metropolitan centre, is often uncharitably described as Asia’s largest slum. This appelation does great injustice to the enterprise of its 10 lakh denizens, who fuel its nearly 20,000 manufacturing units. It would not be an exaggeration to say that there is hardly any item that is not produced here. The gamut of its products ranges from printing presses to leather items, from pottery to ceramics, which form the livelihood not just for inhabitants, but also for those from outside. Dharavi accounts for an yearly production valued at re. 500 crore. Beyond the squalor, filth, prostitution and drug dens touted by Bollywood, it is home to the virtous and the self-employed.
