‘Car-Free Sundays,’ in Elliot’s Beach, Chennai

‘Car-Free Sundays,’ part of ‘Namma Chennai Namakke,’ an initiative of the Corporation and City Traffic Police, conceptualised by the Institute of Transportation & Development Policy and Chennai City Connect Foundation, kicked off at Elliot’s Beach, between 6 and 9 a.m. A 800-metre stretch was off bounds for cars. Residents freely engaged in community activities. Road art, fitness sessions & games, Zumba, badminton, frisbee, karate, yoga, charades, antakshari, music and dance will enliven future Sundays. Bicycles for children above 9 will be rent-free. The initiative is strictly litter-free. While existing shops and hotels can function as usual, no new stalls will be allowed.
