Centre cancels permission for EIA for new Mullapperiyar dam

New Delhi: The ministry of environment and forest (MoEF) has cancelled the permission given by its expert committee for an environmental impact assessment (EIA) study for a new dam at Mullaperiyar. The decision has been taken in view of the case related to the issue is under consideration of the Supreme Court. The MoEF criticised Kerala for not mentioning the fact in its plea seeking permission for the new dam. The Centre had given permission to conduct an EIA last December, following which Tamil Nadu government approached the apex court seeking its cancellation. The Kerala government had reached an agreement with Pragathy Labs and Consultants, based in Secunderabad, for the EIA in the light of MoEF's permission.
