Coastal community in penury

Kozhikode: To members of the traditional fishing community reeling under the onslaughts of a heavy monsoon and trawling ban, spiralling costs of grains and provisions have come as a triple whammy. Women who are employed in ancillary sectors find themselves out of work. Vijayalaksmi, one such afflicted, pours out her tale of woe. As a desperate measure they have now cut down on daily food intake. Rice supplied through ration shops, though infested with grain weevils and stone shards, is the staple diet. String beans and lentils are out of question. The only affordable vegetables are onions and potatoes. As rains have gained strength, country boats too couldn’t venture out to sea.
