Debt-ridden sugarcane farmers pushed to suicide in Karnataka

Bengaloru: Debt ridden sugarcane farmers are pushed to suicide in Karnataka, with no one coming forward to their rescue. Ninge Gowda, a marginal farmer faced with harassment from money lenders and crash in sugarcane prices ended his life by setting himself in fire after burning sugarcane in his farm. Another farmer consumed poison end to his misery. In a month more than 45 farmers have ended their life. The huge default by the sugar factories in their payment to farmers has worsened the crisis. In 2014-15, Rs 2120 crore has to be paid by the sugar factories even after government passing an order for the release. The political influence of sugar factory owners are reason behind non recovery of the defaulted money.
