Increased traces of arsenic found in rice sold in Kerala

Kozhikode: Research by the Pune-based National Chemical Labs has shown that the greater incidence of diabetes and kidney-related diseases in Kerala, with higher chances among the young, is due to the presence of arsenic beyond permissible limits in 30 varieties of rice sold in the State. The U S Food & Drug Administration had earlier warned of increased presence of the harmful metal in rice in South-Asia in general and the Gangetic belt in particular. Dr. O G B Nambiar, former Deputy Director of NCL says it will be more in brown rice. Arsenic is also carcinogenic.
