E P Unny on cartooning in perilous times

Chennai:The nature of political cartoons is to confront the status quo. Of late the space for such critical engagement seems to be shrinking according to E P Unny, Chief Political Cartoonist of The Indian Express. It is not that cartoons have lost their relevance rather they are an inevitable limb of the medium. Infringement by authority on freedom of expression is not a recent phenomenon. It was under the watch of the former UPA minister Kapil Sibal that nearly 200 cartoons were banished from textbooks. On the sidelines of a seminar commemorating R K Laxman and Rajinder Puri organised by Asian School of Journalism, Chennai Unny observed that cartoons are anti-women since the profession is so male-centric.
