Women predominate among kidney donors

Bengaluru: Results of a recent study conducted by the renowned Narayana Health City reveal that almost 70% of kidney donors are women, since they consider the well-being of the male bread-winner of paramount importance for the family. Lloyd Vincent, HoD of Nephrology here says that women volunteer due to social factors also. Greater altruism, female sense of responsibility or even coercion could also be behind this. Women from Maharashtra, Chattisgarh and Kerala {with 74%} lead the country in this regard. The only country where men are in the forefront of donors is Iran, possibly because of governmental support. Five female donors were also honoured on the occasion.
