A decade into the Tsunami: Spl prog
The 2004 killer tsunami caused by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, killed more than 250,000 people, traveled 600 km in a mere 75 min. at 480 kmph, leaving more than 1.7 million homeless in 18 countries., releasing energy equivalent to more than 1,000 atomic bombs. TN bore the brunt of it fury, with Nagapattinam losing 1,500 lives, mostly fisher-folk. Frolickers enjoying post-X’mas revelry on the Marina beach in Chennai, pilgrims in Velankanni, joggers in the stretch in Karakkal, suffered casualties. The fishing village of Alappad, Kollam lost 143 lives. Alappuzha too suffered. Locals complain of the gross dereliction of responsibility of the government machinery that should have come to their aid.
