Kollam dist panchayath on an agricultural self-reliant path

Kollam: Kollam district panchayat has introduced a slew of initiatives in making the district self-reliant in the field of diary, egg and agriculture. The panchayat has revived the farming and extended the cultivation to some 20,000 hectares which was limited to 500 hectares in 2010. The panchayath last year earned a profit of Rs two and a half lakhs in the sale of rice alone and is on a mission to bring out their own branded rice soon. A rice mill on a cost of three crore is coming up near Sooranadu. The authorities also are in the mission to bring out their own packet milk soon. The panchayat has already given subsidies for the farmers to purchase seeds, manures and agriculture equipments.
