Arakkal Kettu
Kettu literally means edifice. The Arakkal kettu was the seat of the Muslim rulers of Kannur and Lakshadweep islands. A typical structure in laterite and timber, it is now a tourist attraction. The Arakkal Rajas who were known as 'Sulthan ul Bahar' (ruler of the sea) followed a matrilineal system, with the throne passing to the eldest son of the eldest woman born in the family. The Dutch captured the fort from the Portuguese and later transferred it to the Ali Rajas. The British took it away from the Ali Rajas when they suspected the Kings of helping the Pazhassi Raja. The fort is 3 km from the city center. This was the residence of the former Arakkal Ali Rajas, the only Muslim royal family of Kerala. It is three km away from KannurBest Season:
