Thangasseri

The western flank of Kollam town, Thangasseri is an ancient port for seafaring traders from Europe and Arabia. The area was enriched by succeeding naval powers who colonized the country, and left behind their distinct identities. The Arabs and the Jews were the earliest to arrive, followed by the Portuguese, then the Dutch and finally the British. And they all left their marks.. They include the remnants of the fort built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, the Dutch cemeteries, and the lighthouse built by the British in 1902 besides churches built in the 18th century. Thangasseri has a large Anglo-Indian population and they continue to uphold their distinct traditions. The lighthouse is open to tourists between 1530 hours and 1730 hours.
