KSRTC needs to cross more hurdles

Thiruvananthapuram: Though the issue of diesel subsidy has been settled for now, KSRTC is bound to face more hurdles. The huge gap between profit and expenditure and the burden over pension issues need to be addressed. The gap between profit and expenditure was Rs 40 crore one and half years back but now it is Rs 67 crore. When the pay revision is implemented, the corporation needs to take an extra burden of Rs 15 crore. There are 40,000 employees and 35,000 pensioners in KSRTC. In other states, the pension is given either by the government or through EPF. The corporation had also made such demand to take over the pension scheme by the state government. If that happens, the corporation can get a relief of Rs 41 crore a month. The Corporation also has the responsibility of social service whenever any new government takes over. The corporation is asked to ply buses on routes prescribed by MLAs. Among the 5200 schedules, only one third gets Rs 10,000 a day as collection. The corporation needs to get Rs 435 crore from the government for issuing free passes owing to social service since the last five years.
