Jayarajan gets bail, walks free

Senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader P Jayarajan, arrested in a murder case, was today granted bail by a vacation bench of the Kerala High Court.
Jayarajan is the 32nd accused in the pro-IUML Muslim Student Federation leader Abdul Shukoor's murder case.

The bail was granted earlier in the day with a Rs 25,000 fine and two personal sureties of the equivalent amount.

The HC which had twice extended the remand period of Jayarajan, said bail cannot be denied always forseeing any further attacks.

The Court had earlier granted bail to Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) Kerala Secretary T V Rajesh, MLA, in connection with the case.

Jayarajan, CPI (M) State Secretariat member and Kannur district Secretary of the party, and Rajesh were arrested for their failure to prevent the murder of Shukoor.

Widespread damages were reported from various parts of the state and a DYFI activist was killed as the hartal called in protest against the arrest turned violent.

Twenty one-year-old Abdul Shukkoor was hacked to death by a group of persons at Keezhara in the district on February 20. (UNI)
