Posted on: 11 Jul 2010

Kochi: Former Union Minister Harin Pathak, who is heading a fact-finding committee of the BJP on the attack on Newman College Professor T J Joseph, today demanded a probe by National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the incident.

Speaking to reporters here, Mr Pathak alleged that the Kerala Government had failed miserably in combating terror and the State was becoming a breeding ground for terrorist activities.

He also demanded that outfits like the NDF and Popular Front should be banned and the State Government bring out a white paper on the investigation into terror activities in the state.

He also noted that his party would highlight the gruesome attack on Prof Joseph in the upcoming session of the Parliament.

Earlier, the four-member panel headed by Mr Pathak, which was constituted by BJP President Nitin Gadkari, met the members of family of Prof Joseph to get a first-hand report information on the sequence of events of the attack that took place on July four.

The other members of the panel include senior Supreme Court lawyer Pinky Anand, Goa BJP Vice-President Wilfred Misquita and Advocate Balasubramanium Kamarasu.

Mr Pathak said the panel would submit a report on the incident to Mr Gadkari on July 13.

The team visited the private hospital where Prof Joseph was recuperating and held discussions with doctors on the progress of the treatment.

The team also visited the incident spot and interacted with locals at Muvattupuzha, he added.

Prof Joseph, who was in the eye of the storm over preparation of question papers having adverse religious remarks, was attacked by a gang of eight people.

He was suspended from the Malayalam Department of the Newman College, Thodupuzha after allegedly preparing a Malayalam question paper for second year BCom examinations which contained inappropriate religious remarks.

In the attack, Prof Joseph sustained serious injuries and was undergoing treatment in a private hospital here.
